Family-Owned Laundromat Makes a Clean Recovery from COVID

"I had my grand opening in December of 2019. I was a little nervous, but being able to count on the support of the SBDC and my advisor gave me the courage to continue on. I am comforted knowing that they are always there for me when I need them."

Bernard Bedgood inherited “the wash house,” as his father used to call it, in 2020. “I stand on the shoulders of my father, who started the laundromat.” This business became an important part of his father's legacy for this low-income neighborhood after he passed at the age of 101. More than just a place to wash your clothes it was meant to be a center for the community where young and old alike could find safe haven & advice. The Alabama SBDC crafted a strategy to help the business recover from the COVID downturn, including a low interest loan for improvements to the business, a revitalized online presence, & social media strategy. “I am very pleased with the help and assistance that the Alabama SBDC is giving me; they've given good advice on marketing.”

The Ch'ihootso Indian Marketplace in Window Rock, Arizona is the cultural and economic center of the Navajo Nation capital city. Located on the main intersection in town, it encompasses open air spots for vendors, permanent shops for lease, a gas station, a convenience store, and a car wash. In the spring and summer, the corner is alive with local residents and tourists seeking a Native American experience. The Arizona SBDC helped their client form their LLC, connect with local organizations, develop new contracts, manage upgrades, and manage the growing business — all critical to their success. SBA Administrator Guzman recently visited the Ch'ihootso Indian Marketplace to spend some time with this SBDC client, business owner Carol Willeto.

Lawrence Teasley and Brandon Mack opened Retro City Sneaker Boutique in El Dorado in August 2022. Both men had business experience, and Teasley also served 21 years in the military, but they needed startup capital. Florence Nunn of the Southern Arkansas University ASBTDC assisted them with business planning and market research, helping them obtain a loan through Smackover State Bank. "Florence Nunn exceeded all expectations helping us format a great business plan,” said Teasley. Now, sneakerheads have a local option for sought-after, limited edition athletic shoes and hats.
