Side Hustle Becomes Big Business for SBDC Client
In 1999, Jason Jones started renting out sound equipment for local concerts and theater productions as a side hustle to support his aspirations as a musician. Over 20 years later, his side hustle has become a multimillion-dollar business, S&L Integrated, based in Thomasville, Ga. “The Georgia SBDC has done great in pointing me in the right direction at every stage of the business,” said Jones.

Son Takes Dad's Company to New Levels with SBDC Assistance
When Calder Willingham graduated from college he had two options: find a job in the corporate world or go to work for his dad's business based in Macon, Ga. "Being a naive 22-year-old, I thought working for him would give me time to go hunt and fish," said Willingham. Soon after joining Credit Bureau Associates, he learned it takes more than he thought to grow a business. Over the years, Willingham and his father have relied on the SBDC's guidance as the business grew to more than 50 employees operating in a 30-state market area. In 2020, SBDC consultants guided the Willinghams through succession of the family-owned business and Calder took over as CEO.

Federal Restaurant Revitalization Fund Brings New Life to Americus Institution
Tracia Tullis and her mom Gladys opened Gladys' Kitchen in Americus, Ga., 27 years ago. The country cooking restaurant known for its crispy fried chicken and signature dessert - the delicious caramel Butter Roll - is a popular gathering place on weekdays, weekends and after church on Sundays."COVID impacted us in a way we've never seen before. We went strictly drive-through, losing about half of our customers and employees. It was devastating. We are a place for gathering and no longer had that space for customers," said Tullis. With the help of her SBDC consultant, Tullis applied for and received the federal Restaurant Revitalization Fund. The grant helped Tullis add a new drive-through window and retain five employees.

Building a Business "Block by Block"
Monica Fenderson loves the design side of architecture, which she practiced in several private firms early in her career. But when she was ready to start her own firm, she approached the Georgia SBDC for assistance. In 2016, she enrolled in the SBDC StartSmart program and MOSA Architects was founded. From 2016 to 2021, sales revenue grew tenfold and employment grew to 5 full-time employees and 5 independent contractors.
