RURAL DEVELOPMENT

The Gardners, a husband and wife team, operate a successful chiropractic clinic in rural Olean

After earning their degrees at the Palmer College of Chiropractic, Sam and Emily Gardner decided they wanted to work together and open a chiropractic clinic in rural Olean. They worked with Advisor Dan Hickman to develop a business plan, draft financial projections and create a marketing plan for the new business. All their work came to fruition when they opened the doors of Gardner Chiropractic in December 2021. Despite the Covid-19 pandemic, the Gardners have built a steady stream of clients, added new revenue streams with retail items, hired additional staff, and are planning to expand their services with more therapeutic options. Emily commented, “Danny and SBDC were a major reason why we were able to open up our business!”

TECH DEVELOPMENT

ExoCell Power Incorporated creates thin, lightweight hydrogen batteries without a clean room

ExoCell's thin, lightweight hydrogen batteries don't need many of the metal components used in normal fuel cells, resulting in a massive reduction in cell mass. The cells are made from a thin, flexible material, which is ideal for military drone applications and other items that need lightweight power supplies. Co-founder and CTO Matt Mayer consulted with Advisor Liam McMahon to discuss equity and share distribution, vesting considerations, and tips for building a successful team.  With SBDC assistance, Excell obtained grants from NYSERDA, US Air Force, National Science Foundation, and the NJ Commission on Science, Innovation & Technology. Mat has used the grant funds to scale the business and hire key personnel.

Jessica and Travis Klaus have made L'Wren Bar a focal point in their community

Jessica and Travis Klaus opened L'Wren Bar in 2018 in Sunset Park, Brooklyn, to bring small bites and specialty cocktails to a neighborhood that needed nightlife. L'Wren features a flexible private space that can accommodate a variety of events and intimate gatherings. L'Wren was closed for indoor dining for three months during the pandemic. Outdoor dining, alcohol to go, expanding food offerings, a new website, professional photography, and their local SBDC were vital to the bar's success through the pandemic. A team of three SBDC advisors helped the Klaus' with Covid funding applications, sales strategies, and marketing. Jessica said, “We absolutely could not have survived without the SBDC.”

Michael Bower made his Eagle Metalcraft an employee-friendly workplace

During the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, Michael did an internet search for business help in Central New York and found the Onondaga SBDC. During initial conversations, Michael said his goal was to purchase and run his own company. As Michael and the Advisor Mark Pitonzo began exploring opportunities available in the area, they found Eagle Metalcraft, a welding shop that did precision sheet metal fabrications. Advisor Pitonzo helped Michael with a business valuation, a business plan, and financial projections for external funding. Michael states, “[we] have been in lockstep for two years. He has been a mentor and coach and was completely invested in my success. He's been encouraging and supportive in my journey.”

Smita Chutke brings cuisine and spices from the Deccan Plateau to Western NY

With the assistance of Advisor Marilyn Roach, Smita Chutke established her brand and launched her universal meat and veggie blends for everyday cooking. Her goal was to simplify the process of using numerous spices in soups, lentils, rubs, or as marinades. Smita also offers farm-to-table dinners, private dining services, and cooking classes and collaborates with many local chefs, farmers, and artisans. Advisor Roach assisted Smita with business planning, financing, appropriate licensing, and basic start-up steps. According to Smita, “Spice doesn't mean spicy; it is just a means to flavor your food if used in the right way. Cooking is not just about learning recipes or techniques, but also an emotion you transfer to your food."
