The SBDC and Henry's Produce grow business in Duffield, Virginia
After losing his job due to COVID, Henry Morris returned to what he knew best — selling produce. “Customers told us about Becki O’Quinn at the [Mountain Empire Community College] SBDC,” Henry relates. “She’s helped us like no other!” Becki helped Henry and Renee put together a business plan and apply for, and win, a $6,500 grant from the Virginia Coalfield Economic Development Authority. They also applied for and received a $25,000 Virginia Food Access Investment Fund Grant. These grants allowed for improvements to keep Henry’s Produce open year-round with produce from Florida and support four employees. “We couldn’t have done it without the SBDC,” Henry concluded. “The SBDC is a fantastic organization; we hope it’s around forever.”

Welcoming Connections Fuel Coffee Shop Success
For Hailey Rogers, a successful coffee shop encourages interpersonal connections and serves excellent small-batch roasts. Hailey took over Shenandoah Joe, which she managed, in November 2021 when she was offered the opportunity to buy the café. She needed to secure funding to buy the business. Allison Dugan, a business advisor at the Shenandoah Valley SBDC, helped Hailey with a business plan and a loan application through Harrisonburg Economic Development. Hailey says, “Allison provided me with every necessary document I needed to complete my loan application." She highly recommends the one-on-one advising, “Having an advisor right there with me to give input while I worked through what my business needed was crucial to my success.”

DBHomes4Hope renovates houses and realizes mission with the SBDC
Davina and Danny Bare saw a need for housing while visiting Lynchburg. This spurred them to launch DBHomes4Hope. Davina says, “Danny, a contractor, and myself, a former Army HR officer, know to make homeownership happen.” They want to renovate homes and help clients buy homes. The SBDC - Lynchburg Region enrolled Davina in their Start Smart Class to write a business plan and connected her with Pinnacle Financial. Pinnacle approved a $10,000 loan. “Our mission is to help families gain homes for generations,” Davina says. The SBDC, she adds, helped make this journey possible. “I'm seeing progress in the families we're coaching and a sense of community,” Davina concludes. “The entity that brought it all together was the SBDC.”
